The course takes place over 20 weeks and comprises 10 core units. The units will be released every two weeks from the start of the course. Download the units or study completely online.
At the end of each unit there is an assessment that will allow you to benchmark your growth in knowledge and understanding. If you wish to receive a Postgraduate Certificate from Middlesex University, an additional marked assignment of 5000 words will also need to be submitted. The assignment will be based on an on-going case study that runs throughout the duration of the course.
Unit 1 is a brief introduction to agribusiness. It covers the history of farming and food, the growth og agribusiness and the agricultural sectors.
Unit 2 will cover the main directions of agricultural science, the symbiotic relationship between agriculture and the environment and the role of genetics in meeting the challenges of modern farming.
Unit 3 covers how to manage a farm, animal husbandry and crop management, investment decisions, investment plans and farm accounting systems
Unit 4 learn the principles and practice of business marketing in context to agriculture, agriculture value chain and execute a marketing plan for agribusiness.
In this unit you will learn how companies are financed and why, what the key facts and ratios that lenders look to when deciding on lending, agricultural and agribusiness lending practices, appreciate the relationship between commodity prices
In unit 6 you will learn how food is distributed and transported, analyse companies at different points along the value chain, understand the global retail food industry
Unit 7 covers the details of international trade in agricultural products, the risks of international business trade, the role of a wide range of documents in trade and how banks facilitate international agricultural trade.
Unit 8 will cover the role of goverment in the dosmetic policy-making arena for agriculture, the role of national and international agencies concerned with agriculture, look at the future state of agricultural research , the legal and regulatory constraints agribusiness operates globally as well as local, regional and national level.
In Unit 9, learn how business valuation techniques are applied, the interrelationship between land values and agribusiness investment, learn how to perform due diligence on investment opportunities and how to value investment opportunities in a range of different agribusinesses.
Unit 10 looks at modelling - how to use excel to build effective investment models, differentiate between good and bad models, create models from data, audit models and present their results, how to apply risk management techniques to agribusiness models
You have the opportunity to choose a validated option for this course and receive a Postgraduate Certificate on completion. This programme is quality assured by Middlesex University and you will receive a Middlesex award on successful completion. However, if the validated option isn’t important to you there is still the opportunity to take the standard course.
